Mature Masculinity: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow and Beyond

  • Course content

As men, we are historical beings that have to somehow reconcile the social, the political, the psychological, and the spiritual. But that’s not it: We are also part of nature.

As social beings, we are embedded into a network of relationships. Part of which is a network of man-to-man relationships: We are our grandfather’s grandsons and our grandsons’ grandfathers, our fathers sons and our sons fathers, our uncles nephews and our nephews uncles. Maybe we are only grandsons and sons, with no male offspring continuing the line of men in our family. In any case, we are standing in a line of men that reaches back to the beginning.

As political beings, we are called upon to express what we want and stand up for what we need. We need to engage in dialogue and discussion to test each other's opinions as much as we need to test our own. And most importantly, we need to stand up to developments that threaten our families and communities. And again, we find ourselves embedded into a network of men.

With all these men, we share the experience of being men. Being men is a more than a role, it is an identity. A collective experience is in many ways like sharing the experience of being an engineer, a psychologist, a politician etc. But it is even deeper than that because it is also a reality: A reality we cannot simply step out off.

    YESTERDAY, TODAY, TOMORROW

The network of men we are embedded in stretches over time and space. But have we ever really taken the time to sit down with the members of that network to hear about their life experiences, the reality they face, and how they cope with it? Have we ever attempted to understand their lives, and what comes from them, through their eyes? Most likely not. Or not enough. Or maybe that time has ultimately passed.

How can we then come to understand the experience of being a man? That experience that we share with so many others? My suggestion is this: Let’s meet in council. Let’s try to piece it together. By sharing the knowledge, wisdom, memory and experience we hold as a circle of men.

Let’s talk about the role, identity and reality of being a man in past, present and future. Living in the here and now is one thing. Allowing ourselves to be informed by past, present and future is another.

    AND BEYOND

But there is more: We are psychological and spiritual beings, and whether we like it or not: A part of nature. No-one understood that better than famous Swiss psychiatrist Carl. G. Jung. And no-one understood better what that meant for our role, identity and reality as men than renowned Analytical Psychologist Robert L. Moore.

In this course, we will talk about what the psyche looked like for C. G. Jung. We will speak about the four archetypes of mature masculinity so brilliantly written about by R. L. Moore: The lover, the warrior, the king and the magician. We will learn about them, connect with them, and have them speak to us. And if we find the time, we will go even deeper to meet the archetype of the royal couple.

All of this will unfold with the turning of the wheel. And with each turn, we will deepen our understanding of the archetypal forces that are challenging us to become fully mature men.

    WHO IS IT FOR

All men interested in embodying Mature Masculinity in a contemporary world.

  • What to expect

You can expect a space of honest sharing, curious listening and memorable storytelling. A space in which you can share your treasured memories and recollections, your deep-seated fears and hopes, and your most authentic experience.

You can also expect a space of dialogue and discussion that will allow you to develop a deep understanding of the accounts, memories, recollections, roles, identities and realities of other men.

With the beating of the drum, we will journey to the archetypes of mature masculinity: The lover, the warrior, the king and the magician. And when we return, we will unleash the wisdom of the group in a powerful circle of sharing, mirroring and visual creation.

    WHAT METHODS WILL BE USED

Methodically, we will employ a mix of council methods, audios and digital tools that visually support our exploration. We will share in full council and in small groups. We will journey to the beat of the drum. It is through our collective struggle, our struggle as a group, that we will weave a colorful tapestry of experience and memory, fusing past, present and future. And it is through our participation in this struggle that we will come to understand what it means to be men in 2024.
